TOM MULLEN had the chorus of “Invisible Hand” cycling in his head for over a decade before he finally realized it as a complete song. According to Mullen, “one day last year I was humming the chorus and the first line of the first verse just popped out. So I sat down to write the rest of the song before I forgot what I’d just done. It sounded to me like something Elvis Costello might have done in his classic period, so I tried to sound like him when singing the lead vocal. The song’s message is simple enough: Maybe we should try a little freedom for a change. What do we have to lose?”
