Brightland Shines is the independent debut release of Paul Totten, a percussionist turned keyboardist and singer/songwriter. Paul earned his BA in Percussion Performance, playing steel drum and touring the West coast. After college, Totten played drums in local L.A. bands at various locations, including the Southern California Cajun Festival with Le Trureaux Delta Band, and with The Hansen Family Band at movie wrap parties and in numerous musical productions. During covid times, Paul rediscovered the piano and a love for writing that sprouted from the loss of opportunities to play live and a need to process life in difficult times. He also discovered his voice and his individual creative expression.
Within a few years, guided by master pianist Mark Harrison (Jimmy Haslip, SNL, John Molo) and outstanding vocalist Stefano Langone (American Idol), 10 songs emerged as a package tied together with themes of loss, redemption, acceptance, love, differentiation, the artist’s journey and hope amidst trials. Brightland Shines is a beautiful place somewhere over yonder. It’s a soulful, free place where there’s plenty of room, but there’s also a price to pay—love’s game beckons you to ante up, and it’s the only game in town.
